Have been told, if we have a civil wedding here, we cant have the wedding package in Mexico, just renewal of vows!!??

What do you think of this?? I have been dealing with a travel agent in Ireland for the last few months, and all along, she has being quoting us for 'The Moments that Matter Wedding Package' and then when we got the confirmation invoice from the UK, it says its for the Renewal of Vows Package. I have just queried that with the UK Travel Agent, and she said "as you will already be married you cannot have the wedding package, you will have the Renewal of Vows package. The ceremony is similar and it is the hotel’s wedding co-ordinator who performs the Renewal as it is not a legal ceremony"

I have read so many reviews on here of people who had their civil wedding at home, then had a symbolic blessing in Mexico. I want our day on the beach to feel like our wedding day...

The reason, we have decided to have a civil wedding at home is to avoid blood tests, translations etc... But this is the first time anyone mentioned to me that we could not be 'married' if we are married here!!

I'm confused too. I know we had the option to have our legal wedding here at home, then have the symbolic ceremony in Mexico. We opted to do the legal ceremony there. I would skip your travel agent, go straight to you resort website and get info from there. Contact the coordinator at your resort via email to get answers, the TA isnt the expert here. You should totally have the symbolic ceremony option. If your resort doesn't offer it, there are plenty of resorts that do.

I agree with Tulumbride2013.  Check with the WC from the resort.  Good luck in finding answers!

You travel agent is right. If you get legally married in Ireland, you then cannot do a legal ceremony in Mexico.If you are worried about getting the legal aspect taken care of before you are surrounded by family and friends in Mexico, then you could wait until you get back to Ireland to get the paperwork done or you could do the legal in Mexico. My husband and I didnt want to bother with the blood tests either so we went down to the courthouse, signed the paperwork and had a justice of the peace do the a quick "ceremony". Because we didnt do the whole walk down the isle, white dress, surrounded by friends and all of our family, it did not feel at all like our wedding and we still use our wedding date in Mexico as our anniversary day. I was worried too that by getting married in the States before we went down to Mexico would make Mexico feel less special, but surrounded by all of our friends and family and having the white dress and reception are what to us, makes it a wedding. To tell you the truth, I dont even remember what day our marriage license says we "got married"on that's how much of an issue it isnt!

But she should be able to get the symbolic ceremony instead of the renewal no?

Thanks for the reply All along, we have been saying that we were having the symbolic wedding as part of the moments that matter wedding package in Now Jade.. The TA in Ireland has been great, has said that we could do that, so we paid our deposit and then when we got confirmation from the UK office, it said it was The Renewal of Vows. I think I will get in touch with the resort itself

Hey Thanks for the reply! I dont want the legal ceremony in Mexico, I want a symbolic wedding. I want to do what you that & thats what I thought we were booking. You say you had your civil ceremony down in the courthouse. So then what did you do in Mexico? Was in not a symbolic wedding?

I think the exact name of our package was "Symbolic Ceremony, but it wasnt any different than the package for "Vow Rewewals". I think they interchange the names but it habe "both" listed for couples that have been married for 10 years and are doing renewing their vows. Even if you dont say you may not get fancy with your vows at the courthouse, to make it legal (in the States anyways), a justice of the peace has to conduct a "ceremony" and you do say something similar to vows. So in a sense, you will be renewing you vows in Mexico. it really is all how YOU look at it.

I actually looked on the resort website for ya, the FAQ s say this- What is the difference between legal (civil), religious and symbolic ceremonies? Only a civil ceremony is legally recognized. A religious ceremony has no legal bearing and does not replace in any way the binding legal civil marriage. A renewal of vows or religious ceremony is a symbolic ceremony. It is performed by a non-denominational minister. (Please note that Catholic ceremonies cannot be performed outside the church). The bride and groom will receive a symbolic marriage which is not legally. So basically everyone here is right including your TA. They are the Same thing, but I would still figure you could get a wedding package with food and ect...
