  1. http://www.mauiweddingmusic.com/ Be advised our wedding was back in Fall 2008. Cambria Moss and her friend performed at our lunch wedding reception at the Five Palms. We booked them for a total of 2 hrs which was great. Both of them were excellent!!! The rate we paid for 2 hrs = $650. Paid another $50 because we wanted a specific song played (music sheet cost) at the reception. Deposit required. It went really well. We told them what time to show up and they came on time and left on time. Very professional. We probably could have negotiated a little but the cost was still within our budget. Your $475 quote is about right but on the highend of course. Good luck.
  2. J: Maui is awesome and welcome to this forum. The BDW Forum was such a wonderful resource for me last year. Anyway, we had our wedding in Maui last year. Check out my OLDER posts from if you need additional advice or reviews. Also, here's the link to our wedding planning site from last year to give you additional ideas. Maui Weddig Oct 12-15, 2008 Your wedding will be beautiful! Good luck. DC
  3. I presume you never been to Maui?!? Wailea is 'the' lux part of Maui. Beautiful hotels such as the Four Seasons and the Fairmont Kea Lani Maui are both located there. I think the Marriott is also located nearby. If you are talking about hosting your wedding at the Four Seasons then you must have a decent wedding budget. Go for it! I would give the Four Seasons in Maui a 4.5 stars (not 5). Here are the reasons: The Four Seasons in Maui guest rooms and the main pool are a bit too close together for my taste. The pool gets crowded during the day but they give you FREE spring water, refreshing towels, and pops. I personally like extra space so the Four Seasons was a no-go for me. If you want another excellent option nearby - I would suggest the Wailea Beach Villas for you and your guests if you are hosting your wedding at the Four Seasons. Check out the Wailea Beach Villas review by Johnny Jet. Honolulu to Maui When you are in Maui - you will do activities. Here are 2 suggestions for you and your guests: 1. Charter a helicopter for you and 4 guests (6 people max inside) as one of your possible activities before or after your wedding day. Blue Hawaiian (Eco-Star) rocks. Be sure to call ahead and ask for a group discount. We loved it. Yes...it was $$$. Bring camera! 2. Charter a REAL sailboat for a little adventure for you and your guests. There is a sailboat in Lahaina that was actually used in the 1997 America's Cup. We made arrangements ahead of time and reserved the sailboat for a sunset sail. The sunset sail was beautiful, the crew was friendly, and it was so much fun. Bring camera! Advice: do NOT do the bike down the volcano tour. Good luck. I wish I am in Maui right now.
  4. Feast of LL is one of the BEST (sit down) luau in Maui. We hosted our evening reception there after our morning ceremony/lunch reception. The service at the luau was excellent. Depending on the # (we had 15) guests you have - you should call ahead and rsvp. We got the best tables in the house. "Center front seating facing the stage". Beautiful sunset...be sure to bring a camera! They offer a group discount as well. The good thing about this luau is that it is ALL you can eat, drink, and tax/grat are all included. There is a public parking lot right across the street from luau location. Go there hungry! We really enjoyed it.
  5. A general advice: There are supermarkets like Safeway and Foodland in Lahaina and Kiehi. The best supermarket is the large Safeway in Kiehi. Their prices are really good...you might not need to OVER SPEND at Costco. Do not go to Walmart for bottled water...wait until you get to a regular supermarket which is way cheaper there by the case.
  6. Read my old post. http://bestdestinationwedding.com/fo...8-2#post586431 To make the long story short: In the beginning, I contacted a # of florists in Maui by get the # from different websites. I called them and left a message but nobody called me back. I know...it was odd. So...I did a little more reading and found a bride who had her wedding at the Ritz in Maui. Her flowers were beautiful. I contacted her and she gave me her florist's #. I called the florist and I couldn't believe how good the price was. I asked her about get leis and more flowers and she recommened me to save $$ by getting leis and extra flowers from Safeway in Kihei (supermarket). It was strange but but she was sincerely trying to save me $$. Yes...I was nervous but everything worked out. (See photo). BTW...the Safeway in Kihei is one of the very best supermarket I have ever been in. The flowers were all fresh. My friends and family were staying at the Westin Villa Kaanapali so she delivered the bouquet to them in the morning. That was really nice. We picked up the leis and the rest of the flowers from Safeway in the morning. The maile lei must be pre-ordered. Flowers at the Safeway is like 50% off from the florist. We order 2 boxes of freeze dried rose petals and shipped them from the states to our hotel. Advise: do not use fresh petals - use freeze dried petals.
  7. My husband created a 'Visitor Site' for our wedding guests. Information for first-time visitors. Wedding Oct 12-15, 2008 Images from the Oct 2008 wedding were also posted. Maui Wedding There are so many options to consider. It all depends on your budget and vision for your special day. Good luck.
  8. I was not able to post the wedding photos on this forum. Give me your email and I will email you a few small images from the Five Palms Grill. We had 14 guests so if you have 30 then it should still be ok. The staff and Kathryn Freeman at the Five Palms were so easy to work with. The timing went really well but there was 1 thing that I would have added at the wedding. After the ceremony and group photos...our guests were confused as to what to do next...(they were like sheeps not knowing what to do). We instructed our guests to walk over to the rest for refreshments but they didn't move. It would have been nice if a staff member at the Five Palms walk down from the rest to lead our guests from the beach to the rest. after the ceremony. It REALLY was not a big deal because everything still worked out. Another real beautiful rest is The Plantation House. It has a breathtaking view and the food was fantastic! I have photos from the rest. It is worth having lunch there after the wedding. Outstanding service and relaxing. Prices were so much better than Mama's Fish House. 9. Just a reminder: Do you want to have a beach ceremony? If so, there is a small government fee now and the permit only allows you in certain part of Maui. The fee is really dumb but it is what it is. Be sure to check with your minister. It is generally included along with the ceremony fee. If you do not care to have your ceremony on the beach then Seawatch is excellent and the Marriott is beautiful. The Seawatch is located by a golf course and is only a short drive from Keihi and Wailea. If you have guests that can drive/carpool then it is not necessary to reserve a shuttle.
  10. My Oct 14, 2008 wedding reception was at the Five Palms Grill in Maui. Just go back and read my OLD post from Oct 29 2008. It is the "A clueless noob in need of help!" post. The Five Palms Grill was EXCELLENT. We had 14 guests and we had our wedding ceremony on the beach outside the Palm Rest in the morning. It was so easy...we walked to the rest after the ceremony from the beach. The wedding brunch style was perfect for us. The view of the beach from the rest was amazing!!!! We got to use the inside rest for FREE too. (Trust me) You do NOT need to get/pay for the outdoor patio. The inside rest is actually BETTER. In Maui...inside is like outside. Everything is just so open. Overall, the cost will depends on your budget. The food at the Palms was excellent and $$ were reasonable. Just so you know, they have an early bird 50% on certain food items when you go there for regular 'early bird' dinner & drink specials. Kathryn Freeman was our Event Coordinator and Shawn Wynne is the GM at the Five Palms. I met both of them the day before our wedding and they discussed all the final details with us beforehand. The staff at the rest was A++++. The Five Palms was A++++ too. Let me know if you have any questions.
  11. Sherry: Excellent review! You are absolutely right. Your Make up/ Hair/ & Photos were amazing. You looked absolutely Fab-tastic! Thank you for sharing. DC
  12. J: Just got back from our wedding in Maui (lunch wedding reception at the Five Palms Grill). They did an exellent job. Let me know if you have any questions. There are so many different ways to save $$ in Maui and still get HIGH quality. Review my other posts on this site for suggestions. I presume you are familiar with the Keihi area. We stayed at the Mana Kai Resort the night before the wedding and it made things so smooth. Booked it via Orbitz.com Tell Kathryn (Five Palms Event Coordinator) that Chuck & Ria from NYC said hello. Congrats! R
  13. I would suggest you to check out tripadvisor.com They have all the reviews. The Plantation House - is the BEST place for lunch because it is a classy place and reasonable $$. *Excellent service and outstanding lunch food. Get the Mahi Mahi Salad. You will LOVE the beautiful backdrop. Trust me...you will WOW your parents...for lunch...100%. BRING CAMERA!
  14. I used Karli Benedict and she was AWESOME. If you have a small party - it is well worth it. She does both hair & makeup. (Kihei area). Her free consultation before the wedding day was well worth it too because you get to chat beforehand. Loved it.
  15. Sherry: Wow...loved your wedding photos! Thank you for posting! I am so happy they came out so totally AWESOME! xx<3XX Congrats!
  16. Mich: If you are planning your wedding in Maui...it really depends on your overall budget. Next, if your wedding is small...you really do not need to hire a WC because you can pretty much plan/do everything online. Don't worry about the weather in Maui...it is REALLY beautiful. We just came back! Trust me...you guys will love it. Just be sure to get to Maui a couple of days ahead of time so you will know where things are located etc. *Remember, you need to give yourself time to pick up your marriage license ($65 fee) before the wedding day and run short errands etc. JJ Preston (our photographer/coordinator/among many other things assisted us with that). BTW...we just celebrated our wedding in Maui on Tues, Oct 14, 2008. I just wanted to drop by this awesome site and give our feedback. We had a beach wedding in front at the Mana Kai Resort. We had a total of 14 guests. After the beach ceremony, we hosted a lunch reception at the Five Palms Grill. The staff at the Five Palms was awesome. They gave us their entire indoor rest. to use during lunch. The Five Palms Grill (located at the Mana Kai Resort) which is located right off the beach. Beautiful if you want a beach ceremony then walk to a reception instead of driving. It was so simple for all of us because we stayed at the Mana Kai Resort the night before our wedding. Some of our guests also stayed at the Maui Hill Resort (2 bedroom suite - across the street from the Mana Kai Resort) while some other guests stayed in the Kapalua area (45 mins drive away from Keihi) Our hair/makeup artist came 5:30 AM to get all the girls ready. The wedding ceremony was at 10:30 AM and the lunch reception was at 11:30 AM. I know it sounds weird getting leis and wedding flowers from a supermarket but they have the BEST $$. We were actually referred to Safeway by our bouquet florist in Kapalua. We used Sunya's Flowers 808-669-8570. She was a referral from a friend and she did an amazing job! My bouquet was so beautiful and Sunya's price was so reasonable. You just need to figure a way to pick it up from her in Kapalua. 18. Sherry: I agreed...your flowers will look totally awesome. Don't worry so much because everything will come together. Are you getting a convertible? It would look so nice after the wedding with the top down although they are $$. Convertibles are expensive but cheaper via Hotwire.com at around $45 a day. Totally ask for the Ivory convertible PT cruiser! I saw a wedding couple last year in Maui with the Ivory PT crusier and they looked so good in it. I must have it for the drive to Hana after my wedding!
  19. Congrats! The Westin Villa is so much better than the Westin if you want space. Westin Villa is quite special. Located in Ka'anapali and only minutes from Lahaina, it is like living at home but you are away from home. The drive to the Wailea area from Kaanapali is approx. 40 mins. It is located like 2 miles from the Kapalua airport so it might be a good idea to fly there from Honolulu. You can NOT fly direct to Kapalua because it is a small airport with no landing light. The Westin Villa offers free parking, free WIFI, & no resort fee. In addition, the Westin Villa has a 'FREE' shuttle that takes you in between the other SPG hotels (Westin Hotel & Sheraton Hotel) including Mala Wharf (an outdoor shopping mall with cool places to hangout) and Lahaina (there are 2 supermarkets located in Lahaina - Safeway and Foodland where you can purchase reasonable priced foods & drinks *See supermarket customer service for a free discount card). The Westin Villa is a relatively 'NEW' family oriented resort/timeshare (opened in 2003) and is quite large. It is divided in 2 areas (Northside & Southside). Part of the Northside is still under construction as of 2007. There are 2 huge swimming pools & 4 outdoor jacuzzis. Suggestion: Go to the Northside if you do not want to see or hear kids. The Southside pool is sometimes crowded with kids because there is a water slide there. Reminder: There is no late check-out allowed but if your flight is late, you can request the hotel to give you a pass so you can hangout until you are ready to go. You are welcome to use the hotel's amenities (including fitness center showers, sauna, tv room, game room, & the gym lockers). Each Westin studio suite/room has a small kitchen area - a dish washer (dishes included), a washer/dryer (detergent included), a microwave, & a fridge (with an icebox). There are also BBQ gas grills located throughout the resort just in case you want to grill yourself something to eat. Simply go to the hotel general store and they will give you the necessary tools to BBQ. This is really cool because you can go to the supermarket during the day and purchase a six-pack of Bud and then grill yourself a T-bone for dinner. Just remember to bring your own bottle of Peter Luger BBQ sauce & salt/pepper with you from home.
  20. azhuskergirl: Don't worry. I was at the Safeway in Maui last year. The Safeway you are talking about is just like any other supermarkets in the States. When you are in Lahaina - you actually have 2 supermarkets to choose from. Safeway or Foodland (located across the street from McDonald's) at the Lahaina Center. Their prices are very reasonable and you can get purchase (case) water, big bags of snacks, beer, even sushi and sandwiches. It is not worth driving all the way to Costco when there are 2 markets in Lahaina already. *Be sure to get one of those discount card at the customer service desk before checkout. See link below. Old Lahaina Center Store Directory
  21. No problem. I sort of mapped out Maui when I was there last year for my guests. ADDITIONAL FOOD OPTIONS: Old Lahaina Center Store Directory The Old Lahaina Center is located right off the Honoapiilani Highway (main road between Lahaina & Kaanapali). Front Street is pretty cool during the evening (a lot of tourists though). *(You make a left at the traffic light when you see the 'Subway' sandwich shop on your right). I missed it a couple of times. McDonald's is located right across the street from the Lahaina Center just in case you need your coffee fix. There is also a NYC style pizza shop located across the street from McDonald's. hee hee... KIHEI HAPPY HOUR: Five Palms Beach Grill We decided to go with the Five Plams Grill for our after wedding lunch reception because it is located right by the beach (walk over afterward). According to my WC - they have an awesome view & super Happy Hour daily 2 pm - 6 pm. HIGH END SHOPS: Whalers Village (In Kaanapali) It is like a mall with nice resturants and shops. This is also the place to park your car if you want to snorkel near the Black Rock (which is located by the Sheraton). The Hula Grill at the Whalers Village is nice but $$. IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW: (share it with your guests!) When I flew to Maui last year (NYC to Honolulu to Kapalua), my flight was originally scheduled to fly into the Kapalua Airport but it was redirected to Kahului Aiport (OGG) instead. Relax. The reason is because the Kapalua airport is a very small airport and it does not have any landing lights. In case this happens to you - don't worry about your rental car - you can still pick up your car at OGG even if your RSVP is for Kapalua. There will be a $50 drop off fee later per the OGG car rental staff. When you return your car to Japalua, just explain what happened & they should not charge you the $50 drop-off fee. That is what happened to me. If you are taking the last flight out from Kapalua, be sure to return the car in time. The last FREE airport shuttle is like a full 1 hr before the last flight out of Kapalua. You do not want to miss the last airport shuttle.
  22. Sherry: We are looking for hair/makeup too. What is your cost for either the bride or the bridesmaids? Thank you for sharing.
  23. I went to Maui last year just to check it out. Maui is beautiful. Believe it or not, it is even more beautiful if you play golf. Yeah...the golf courses there are amazing. Advice: I would advise against the caravan to Hana. Your guests will surely get sick sitting in the back of the van/bus. There are lots of curves on the road to Hana and they will get dizzy from the drive. The drive to Hana is really better for couples. I did it myself just to see what it is like and it was fun but challenging. You MUST start your drive by 7 am (got this hint from my wc). That way...you will be the ONLY car on the road. The later you go...the more likely you will get stuck behind a bunch of cars or (worst) tour buses. Trust me...it is no fun sucking up their fumes or when the road is crowded. On the way back - try lunch at Mama's Fish House. It is like $50 per person but the rest. is very pretty. Don't go to the Garden of Eden (tourist trap) on way to Hana. It cost $10 per person to see a bunch of plants for 15 mins (save the $$ for lunch/drink later). Stop by the Hana Hotel if you need to use the restroom. The restrooms there are clean but food was VERY expensive. SAFETY ALERT! The beaches in Maui are very different than places like Miami (East Coast). The reef is really close to the beach (you walk like 3 ft out and it drops to 10 ft). If you are not a good swimmer - you should bring a swimming noodle with you when you snokel. Sad but true...a bride lost her husband (drowned) last year during their honeymoon. He apparently was not a very good swimmer and did not know about the reefs. LUAU: We are doing the Feast at Lele. You can get a group discount if you can bring a minimum of 20 guests. The cost like $128 with tip/tax per person (all you can drink). I understand they take photos of guests before the luau and they sale the photos to guests afterward for approx. $30 each. Check out this Maui video I found from JohnnyJet (world traveler) Wailea, Maui *(can't wait to go back to Maui). It is really nice. YouTube - Wailea, Maui Johnny Jet Maui Trip Summary (ideas) Honolulu to Maui REST. SUGGESTIONS Maui GUIDE-South Maui Tour - Maalaea I ate at the Ma'laea Grill for lunch when I was in Maui and the food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable (like the main land). You basically overlook the harbor. The Maui Ocean Center is located in Maalaea too.
  24. Our ceremony will be in the morning by the Keawakapu Beach so we are hosting a lunch reception at the Five Palms. Anybody been to this place?
  25. I visited Maui last year (Nov 07) just to see what Maui is like before our BIG wedding (this fall). Yes...it was a long flight. Research baby! Anyway, Costco and Walmart are located in Kahului. Do not over buy your stuff in Costco because Walmart is like next door across the street. Remember, there are 2 super markets in Lahaina *(they not too far from Kaanapali) just in case you need anything else. Their prices are reasonable. Believe it or not wine and liquor are pretty cheap in Maui for some odd reason. Eggs and milk = cost more that the main land. Gas = same as the main land $$$!
