  1. Andrea, that is the style I want. The veil I made is similar, just a little shorter. It's between mt wrist and elbow. I think I still like the veil look and will take both. If it's really windy I'll go no veil, but if the weather is nice I'll wear the veil.
  2. I know the birdcage veil seems like it would be the best idea, but I'm not a fan of them. They just don't look good on me. Also, it's just the 2 of us, so no big reception. I'm looking at just the wedding and pictures.
  3. I guess this questions is for all the other couples that have eloped (just you2). How did you guys get ready? I am getting my hair done at the resort and can send him to the bar after he is dressed while I put my dress on and finish getting ready...but I can't zip and button the dress by myself. Should I just forget about him not seeing me before hand (because it's just us 2 I'm not sure how realistic this is) or try to find someone at the resort to button me up. What did you do?
  4. I've got all you cheapies beat!! Both my rings came from estate auctions. My engagement ring was $350 + $50 to size...not bad for a .55ct ring in white gold. My wedding band was $22 + $40 for sizing. They both date from about the 1930s. So for my band I paid $62. I'm telling you auctions are great if you know what you are looking for
  5. Here's our cake topper. I wanted these for the longest time. They were my 1st wedding related purchase. Some people thik they are odd...but we love them.
  6. I can't decide if I should wear a veil or not. I had planned to and even made myself one, it's about elbow length. That was until I chatted with the designer of my dress. She thinks that a veil isn't the best idea. Her reasons are; We put allot if effort into the design of the back of the dress and a veil would cover it. Also she thinks that a veil would be hot and if it's windy, blowing all over the place. Here is the thread that has my dress picks. http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/t36515 I was planning to wear my hair up in a bun or French twist with the veil underneath and a flower on the side ( the same flower in the pics w/o the tulle frame). The girl who made my dress thinks I should wear the flower with the tulle frame with that hair style. I don't know what to do now. A veil seems so bridal to me and sounds lovely, but I can see her point about the back of the dress. I would love some opinions.
  7. Great questions...I'd be interested to know this as well.
  8. I remember a post on here a while back that was asking about a party boat cruise in the Montego Bay area. I know allot of brides having been looking for an outting for guests to do. I had been on the Cool Running boat cruise on a previous trip to Jamaica and had a blast, but that runs out of Ocho Rios, so I was looking for something similar out of Montego Bay. I did find a few options. The 2 with the most recomendations are Tropical Dreamer and Freestyle. I did a little bit more looking and there is quite a price difference. It looks like the Tropical Dreamer runs about $65 p/person and the Freestyle runs about $43 p/person. (if you can get to the cruise ship pier you can save $8 transfer fee) So I think Joel and I will do the Freestyle cruise. I wrote them an e-mail and got the phone number to call once we are in Jamaica: 876-381-3229 Just wanted to give an FYI to everyone
  9. I know I can't wait to be on that plane. It has gone sssooo fast! I still have a list of To Dos...but even if they don't get done in time, I'll still have a blast!
  10. I sent an e-mail last night asking a few questions...and got a quick response from Michael. In the e-mail he included a link to his new website. I thought everyone here would like to see it: best images
  11. My 2 best friends are throwing FI and I a Bon Voyage party a few days before we leave. We are not planning a AHR or any other type of party when we return, so I guess this would be our big celebration. I am also not having a bridal shower or bach party. We are eloping...so no guests with us in Jamaica. They had originally planned this to be a surprise, but realized they had to tell us to get the invite info for many of the guests. I am so grateful to my girls for this and will get them a Thank You gift...but my big question is do I do party favors for the other guests just like it was a wedding reception? If so...what can I do as a favor in 2 weeks?
  12. Don't worry I don't think that is a rude question. The dress was a gift, so I actually didn't pay anything for it...but if I had, it would have been less than $1000. I did look into other 30s era reproduction gowns. (like those at Isadoras ). They started at $1000 and then went up...way up mostly. So I think having my custom was the way to go. This is the way to go if you know exactely what you want. If you are unsure of the style it may not be the best choice as you can't try the dress on before hand. I was luck to have the vintage gown 1st as I knew how the style looked on my body. I would still suggest going to some bridal stores and try on dresses that are similar to the one you want to make sure the style fits your body type.
  13. I have been working with a WC at the resort name Chantelle. She is really busy and can be a little slow to respond if the wedding is still a little while off. She did contact me about 6 weeks prior with extra details and info. If there is anything specific, please let me know. I think I have almost all of it now as we are just a short time from leaving.
  14. The jewelry on the back are dress clips. They are from a Trifari Duette set (vintage jewelry fans will know what that means). Jen sewed those on so I wouldn't loose them. I would say they are more shield shaped than heart. The one on the front is also a dress clip, but it is placed on using the dress clip mechanism. I love dress clips and they are one of my fav styles of vintage jewelry. No ones made them in about 50 years and I can figure out why...they are awesome pieces of jewelry.
  15. Yup, the jewelry is all mine. I made the earrings from scratch...but the dress clips on the front and back are 1920s pieces that I reapired and restored. I also made the hair flower. You can't see it well in the pics, but it also has a rhinestone center that matches. I also have a bracelet that I am not wearing in the pics that I will wear on the wedding day...it is a piece that has been passed down from FMIL's family (few generations back). She recently gave it to me. Unfortunately, I forgot it for the pics
  16. And last, but not least....a pic of Jen and I. She is the one who made the dress. I am sssooo lucky to have such talented friends. Jen is using the construction of this dress and it's story for her application to graduate school in London. (advanced degree in historical costuming)
  17. As some of you may remember. I am having my wedding dress custom made based on a vintage 1930s gown that I own. Well I got to wear it this weekend for my Bridal portraits. (also got b-pics done...more on those later) Here is a quick pic of the original Harlow gown Here are my pics from the photo shoot on Sunday This one is kinda goofy, but fun
  18. I agree that gmail is the better option. I get almost no junk mail there...but toms at hotmail. I now just use my hotmail for junk...and only check it weekly.
  19. It seems to have gone so fast!. I can't believe that it's almost time. Where did the time go? I had my dress fitting yesterday and all that needs to be done to the dress is to finish the hem. I can't wait to be on that plane headding for the warm tropical sun with my FI!!!
  20. I think doing table number with a theme of classic Hollywood couples would be great. They could be real or fictional. Think: Burton & Taylor Bogart & Bacall (or Bergman) Hepurn & Tracy...the possibilites are endless. Here is a great little slideshow that can give you some ideas: Classic Hollywood couples! CHECK THEM OUT!!
  21. I know how you feel. My ring has a fantastic design on the side that I wasn't sure I wanted to cover up. Here is a pic: Also, my ring is an antique and not shaped like modern rings...so no wedding band I looked at worked. Finally I found a very delicate antique curved wedding band. It's very fine with a delicate design. The curve of the band did not match the curve of the ring, so I took it to my fav jeweler and he bent the band to match my ring. It's very low profile and does not cover allot of the design on the side of the ring, which is one of my fav things about my e-ring. This might be an option for you...or you can just get a simple band for your left hand and wear your e-ring on your right hand whenever you feel like changing things up....that way you can have both.
  22. I went to the used book store and got a cheap copy of one of Kevin Aucion's make up books. They have step by step directions with illustrations on how to do many styles. When I find the one I am going to use. I'm just going to copy the page and bring it with me.
  23. I am sorry but that shop's service is wrong on so many levels. Both my sister and I adopted dogs from rescues for abused dogs. Both our dogs as a result of the former abuse have problems and get frightened around people they don't know. We have worked countless hours with our dogs and the improvement from when we got them is 150%....but going to get Cleo's nails cut can still be traumatic for her. My sisters dog is a gigantic mastiff. She is bigger than my sister and was over a year old when they adopted her. When they 1st got her she spent weeks hiding in the corner cowering. It was very strange to see such a large dog so afraid of people. My sister has put countless hours and tons of love into Lulu and she is a different dog today. Now when we visit she comes up to us and rests her head in our lap. Now if I went to that shop and they told me my dogs reaction was my fault as an irresponsible owner. I think I would have hit the woman in the face. You can correct bad doggie behavior, but you can' erase former abuse. Sorry, but that really chaps my hide.
  24. I agree with Abbie...couldn't have said it better. I think a big problem with some vacationers is they don't do any research. They want the Ritz service, but want to pay for Motel 6. I have to keep laughing at some of the reviews that our resort is getting. My fav is the one that complains about no cocktail service on the beach. (how hard is it to walk a few yards to the bar??) If they had even glanced at the Riu's website they would see that Riu has 4 levels of hotel...and the RMB is the lowest level. If you wanted the white glove service then you should have booked one of the higher class Rius. FI and I always joke that we are what we call "blue collar kids". We will never be the type to afford a Ritz or Four Seasons....and wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if we could.
  25. I know how you feel...but trust me, it will be here before you know it. Time just flies by while you are planning.
