  1. Hi Everyone:) I'm sorry to say that I will be signing off this site. I think that I've replied to all the questions that have been directed at me so far. I appreciate all the help I've received. You all seem to be amazingly creative, supportive and giving women (and I think there are a few men too!). Good luck in your lives and thank you! As parting words I'd like to say that many of these paradise locations that we are choosing to be married in are actually very poor countries. I think that the more brides that choose these locations the more chances we have to make a positive impact. This can be done as easily as making our purchases there to support the local economy, tipping generously, donating to local charities rather than wedding favours, and being evironmentally conscious of the choices that we make while down there. I'm sure that many of you have other wonderful ideas on how we can leave our paradises just a little better than how we found them! Good luck and have fun! Jenn
  2. OK, I think that I've replied to everyone's questions now. I'm sorry to say that I will be signing off this site. I appreciate all the help I've received and hope that I've helped out a little myself. Good luck.

One question for you Jenn where did you find the maracas for $1? We really wanted to do that as well and if we could buy them there it would be great. Ok two questions, do you know if we were to order tumblers (coffee mug style) would we be able to ship them to the resort, would they accept them? We thought this would be a good idea to give to the guest for their drinks for the week, both eco-friendly (not so much plastic use) as well as keep those frozen drinks cold longer Anyhow -looking forward to any other info from brides that are getting married at the Palace. Thanks again and congrats- Jaime Hi. I found the maracas in the little tourist town Playa del Carmen. Some vendors list them for up to $5 but they'll sell them to you for $1 if you're buying a bunch. As for the shipping, I'm really not sure. I'm sure that the resort would accept it for you but I'm not sure that it would even get there safe never mind be properly delivered to you by the resort. Good luck!

I'm thinking that if they are a guest, it shouldn't matter, but I don't know how that will work out. Hi:) Sorry but I'm not going to be posting my pics. I'm no photographer myself but I thought they were well done. We also got our prints and cd with JPEG photos after we left. The photog himself was professional and willing to work with us rather than tell us what to do. I even emailed him a month after the wedding for a photo I forgot to order and he's currently looking it up. His name is Juan Carlos Magallon, unfortunately I can't remember his website. I'll PM you his email. Good luck.

If you did, does it cost more? I loved your ideas about the maracas..totally stealing that!!! Also the welcome letter with an itinery on it. Did you print those up before you left? What time was your wedding and how much time did you have in between your ceremony and your dinner? I think that is it!! Once again, thank you for your review..it has really eased my mind! Desiree Thank you. We did not have a welcome dinner but we did eat together as a big group a few times. They let us make these reservations more than the max 3 days in advance 'cause we were such a large group (31). I'm sure you could arrange to eat together the first day but I'd book this in advance via email. I did print my letters before I left. I'm sure you could do it down there but it'd be a lot harder. My wedding was at 5 pm and it was still hot! We had 3 hours between our ceremony and dinner.
  6. No, Bota Fogo does not have a sound system so they couldn't play your cd If you get the dj he brings his own equipment. However at the ceremony they do have big speakers and a mic so people can hear you. Oh and they might be able to play your cd during the ceremony. I think they send out the same standard email to every bride. I remember I chose the restaurant and ceremony site by email and everything else once I got there. They responded to my emails really fast. If you don't get the quick response you'd like you could call but the connection might be horrible. Don't worry... every bride I spoke to was thrilled with their wedding at that resort. Yours is going to awesome too!

We just got our email from the WC and I started to freak because it's coming up so soon and I feel like I have nothing done!!! This review completely calms me - except for the part where you brought your own speakers...we simply cannot afford a DJ - and I'm worried I'll want to dance/have a smallish reception type thing...what are the speakers like that you brought? Computer speakers or an actual sound system I'm so glad I found your review - you don't even know!!! (well - actually you might I'm so glad I can help:) There were certainly people on this forum that helped me! What restaurant is your reception in?? Cause if you have it in Bota Fogo and don't get music they don't have any to provide you during dinner - Just an FYI. As for speakers, I brought a hometheatre sound system that I bought for about $600 from Bestbuy. It was expensive and it wasn't as smooth as having a dj but I rationalized that I could keep it once I got home. I divided the stereo up between my groups carryon luggage so nothing got broken. I did this 'cause it was important to me to have a first dance etc. and I knew that I wasn't going out to any clubs after! You could still easily go to the Riu Tequila and party with your group after the dinner reception. I spoke with a couple brides who did this and had a great time (and drinks are still all-included). I also saw a bride on here who just brought a $100 boom box and just played slow music on that. Or, you might even be able to rent one of the live music people mentioned in the extras for just an hour later in the evening. They'd arrive after dinner, you'd dance, it'd be just as good if not better. Don't stress just get creative!

We had the photographer for approx. 5 min before the wedding and about an hour after. You can pay extra for additional time. Oddly enough they didn't charge me for the chairs or covers. In email correspondence they quoted me as having to pay for these as well as a few other "extra" things that were just included once I got there. I'll post the info they sent me by email before the wedding.

  11. Meant to make this short but it’s really long! I got married at the RPRM this May 23rd. It was incredible and I would totally recommend it to anyone. Our whole wedding cost about $3000 (1700 for the wedding package and 1300 in extras). Resort In General: Beautiful and new. By far the nicest Riu in the area and impressed everyone, even a couple VERY picky guests were blown away. The food was awesome - even according to my husband who works at what is probably the top restaurant in Canada. The booze was brand-name and flowing freely. The service was amazing, like the pool boys would run to get your drinks to you faster! I thought the beach was great. I had been worried about the fence/breakwall but it was a total non-issue and you don't have to worry that a hurricane will wash your beach away a month before your wedding. The waves were rough for a couple of days though - they had no swimming warnings up one day and one of my guests had to rescued! Oh and they upgraded us to their best room in the house for free. I wouldn’t expect this as I’m sure we just got lucky but it was an amazing suite with a double tier balcony, 2 jacuzzis (one outside), marble everything, etc. Resort – Wedding: I saw about 4 or 5 different weddings while I was there and they were all different. They seemed to be willing to accommodate whatever style you wanted to do. Small warning- if you have the ceremony on the beach you have to walk by the pool bar and I heard more than one bride being heckled by some drunk moron. I know that this can happen anywhere and I think that the clientele at this resort is better than elsewhere (they don’t accept spring-breakers) but it can still happen. My wedding was beautiful. Perfect even. We chose to get married at the Gazebo which is situated just in front of the line where the sand meets the grass. It’s far from private but it is off to the side and people watch respectfully from a distance. (Oh – for beach weddings they close off an area for you so you don’t get sunbathers right next to you!) It was a kinda hard for some people to see ‘cause the poles holding the gazebo up blocked their view. However, it truly felt like my husband and I were the only ones in the world when we stood in there … and there’s a mic so people can hear. It’s in Spanish first then translated into English. It was brief –10 min in total. There’s no rehearsal and no one really tells you what to do (besides when and where to show up) but it works out fine. I told my bridal party where to stand the night before though or it might have been more confusing. We spent extra and got a harp player for the wedding. It was beautiful and well worth the $400 ‘cause their music on cd sounds really cheesey (in my opinion). I used the bouquet included (you choose from two or buy an upgrade) and they were able to do pink roses instead of white for me. It was beautiful. I didn’t get the bridesmaids flowers and it really was not a big deal – like no one noticed. Reception: We had an area of the lobby bar reserved for us for a cocktail reception between the ceremony and the reception. We had the reception from 5:30-8:30 in Bota Fogo restaurant. We paid an extra $400 to have a private reception. They allowed us to do this even though your supposed to have a minimum of 40 ppl and we only had 31. They said by email that it would also be an extra charge of $20 a person for the 9 ppl I was missing but it was never mentioned at the resort. Bonus. The food was different but good. It was soup/salad & dessert by buffet and dinner was basically all meat. Servers came around with giant skewers of 5 different kinds of meat and sliced you off some. Not great for vegetarians but we liked it! We didn’t want to spend the $1000 to get a DJ so we brought down a stereo system for music and a mic for speeches. When we looked at the restaurant with the wedding coordinators we realized that there wasn’t an outlet where we needed it. Amazingly they called maintenance and installed one that day! They also allowed our groomsmen in during the first seating to set up the equipment. I thought that was very accommodating of them considering the whole hassle came from the fact that we were cheaping out on their DJ! Service was great. At one point during dancing, we blew a fuse with our stereo and the servers immediately rounded up tequila shots for everyone while the problem was being fixed. 5 min later and a hefty dose of tequila and everyone was dancing again! Photos: The resort photographer was awesome. I was a little worried that it would be the pool boy with a disposable camera but these worries proved to be unfounded as Carlos was an absolute professional. Our pics are beautiful and he did as we asked – a couple family shots and a lot of spontaneous shots. We left the resort with 62 printed photos and JPEG files on cd for $500 total. Spa - Hair: I was a little worried about my wedding day hair 'cause I hadn't done much planning and I NEVER like it when a hairdresser does my hair. However, a girl named Elena at the spa did an absolutely amazing job. I LOVED it. She took 2.5 hours and a lot of care to give me the best hairdo I'll ever have! I booked my hair-trial at the last minute and my wedding day hair the evening before my wedding - although I don't recommend doing it this way I was impressed that they accomodated last-minute-me so graciously. Make-up - MAC: I bought $350 worth of MAC make-up and brushes for my wedding and regretted it the second I walked away. If you have unlimited funds and are willing to do your own make-up this is the way to go… my makeup lasted perfectly all night. However, if your on a tighter budget I would have trusted the spa (with a trial) and it would have been way cheaper. My only other advice in this department is have someone have your powder ready for right after the ceremony and before pics. I was a little shinier than I would have liked in my wedding photos. AIRLINE - USA 3000: I wouldn’t recommend our airline. They were rude and unhelpful. They wouldn’t count my husbands computer case as a personal item (it says briefcases count on their website) since the computer was not actually in it. Therefore we had an extra carry-on with our wedding clothes. Our carry-on had our expensive speakers in it so we wouldn’t check it. We had 29 other people on the flight – many of whom didn’t have carry-ons at all and they held us up for 30 min on this “what counts as a personal item technicalityâ€. Stangers in line were offering to help before they finally let it on it my husbands mother carried it (wtf?!). After all this I ended up stuffing my dress overtop of other people’s carry-on’s (don’t believe them when they say you can lay it on top of things in the overhead compartment – they mean stuff it in! --- Sorry for the rant. Things I’m so glad I did: 1. Maracas – I bought them down there as wedding favours for $1 each and attached a poem I found on here: Now the party’s getting good, we’d like to hear this if we could, stand and shake with all your might, and see the groom kiss his bride tonight. It was the best! People used them for kissing during dinner and then danced with them and then as we left the group for our room at the end of the night, they shook ‘em and cheered! 2. Welcome letters – I wrote welcome and where and when the ceremony/reception would be and had the hotel deliver them. No gifts or OOT bags as I would have like but people loved the thought and it saved me from telling them wedding details by the pool. Wish I would have: - Made personalized travel mugs, I think they would have went over well. - Not ever worried about this wedding beforehand. Do as much as you choose to make it your day but don't feel pressured or stressed. I put very little planning and pulled off an amazing wedding that everyone was thrilled with – My hubby and I most of all!
  12. Thanks again Kelly! The pics/ descriptions do really help me get a good idea of what to expect. All the rooms look nice but the suite certainly does look worth the extra cash.... I'll have to check our budget!
  13. Kelly, Did you have to pay a lot extra for the Jacuzzi suite or did you get a free upgrade? My TA is quoting us at $1000 more to have this option. It does look really, really nice though...
  14. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Reading your wonderful review and looking at your pictures has really pumped my fiance and I up for our May wedding!!!!
  15. Hi. I'm getting married at RPRM this May. There's quite a bit of info and some photos on the site. I don't know if I'm much of a resource yet but I promise to write a very detailed wedding review come May!
  16. Congratulations and welcome to the forum!! I'm getting married at RPRM in May. There's a lot of good information on this site if you browse along. If you look at the RPRM through Destination Weddings in Mexico (from the main page) there is a ton of great information. There's also a really good picture of a gazebo. It's practically on the beach anyhow!
  17. Hi:) I spent a couple of months in Peru and Ecuador about 5 yrs ago. I really loved both places and found them full of adventure and culture. However, my finance was in Argentina recently and it seemed like a great place to have a destination wedding. Argentina has beautiful wine country, a vibrant capitol and it is sooo inexpensive for the quality that you receive. I think that you should consider the characteristics of your potential guests. If they're true hard core travellers take them to jungles of Ecuador, Macchu Picchu or Galapagos. If they might enjoy a little more tame of an experience Argentina offers some culture rich adventure that would be enjoyed by all. Good luck and happy travelling!
  18. Hi. I'm getting married at RPRM next May. I filled out that form through my TA and they emailed a confirmation number about 2 weeks later. That's about all you get from them until a few months before the wedding! I do know that there are different restaurant options based on your group size but I haven't seen any pictures of them.

If you have more than 50, you can have a private reception at Bota Fogo, the Brazilian restaurant at the second sitting, which is at 9:30 pm (I think). Otherwise, you can have a semi-private reception for guests less than 50 at Bota Fogo or Chillis, a Mexcican restaurant. Here the wedding coordinator's first email to me: Thank you for considering RIU Hotels & Resorts for your Wedding!! To finalise your wedding details before your arrival please be so kind to provide us with the following information: 1. We need a list with your guests names, arrival days and Hotel where they have their room reservations. 2. Which restaurant do you prefer Bota Fogo or Chillis? (I have attached the menu) 3: Cake : (Royal and Caprice WP) flavour: chocolate or vanilla Filling: vanilla, chocolate, peach, strawberry How big do you want the cake? 4. Which wedding spot do you prefer? For Riu Palace Riviera Maya the options are: Gazebo: From 2 to 100 guests, not private, extra charge for the chairs. Kiosk: From 2 to 30 guests, elegant, secluded, not extra charge for chairs, good for high heels. It's very important that you show up at your appointment on time to finalise all details for the wedding. If you don't show up your wedding will be automatically cancel. Thank you for your kind comprehension and do not hesitate to contact us if you shall require further assistance. warm regards, Cinthya Patron We chose to go with Chillis, booked 17 people for the Mezzanine (outdoor covered), which sits up to 30 people. You can only have it for 1.5 hours--if you want another 1.5 hour, it's an additional $300 usd. :-( They will let you bring ipod and speakers. They don't have speakers, AV equipment available for you to rent. You're not allowed to use external providers (i.e. florist, photographers, caterers, etc). However, I'm covering a night's accommodation for Elizabeth Medina and her assistant, so they are 'guests' and can photograph. Also, I noticed they've hiked the prices of additionals/extras significantly from last year (i.e. flowers, musicians, DJs, etc). I'm lucky they still honor the prices that was published when we booked last year. For example, the Mariachi band was $430 usd per hour...now it's $530! The bridesmaid's bouquet was $25--now it's $50! I can say that their prices are now aligned with what you would expect to pay in a classy hotel in the US. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need anything else. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is very helpful!! Good luck with your last minute planning and have a great wedding/honeymoon! Jenn

There is a thread with pictures of the wedding gazebo and such in it.... will post a link if I find it. Otherwise good luck and I'll let you know when I figure out more! Jenn
