Americans in Cuba? At all?

So... this is probably a really stupid question...

but are American citizens allowed to travel to Cuba at all? I thought that the restrictions had been lifted, but the american travel site on Cuba makes it seem like Americans can only go with a specific government visa...

Its not really a problem, but my best friend from childhood married an American, and I'm definately inviting them, and would really like them to come, but I don't want to change my plans .... it has taken me a really long time to be happy about the country I chose!!!

But I'll be really bummed if she decides not to go because her husband can't go. Although, odds are they can't afford it anyway.

I ran into this same problem when considering Cuba as I had a lot of american guests. They would definately have to go through Canada or Mexico but it is really a gamble and if it ever got figured out that they went there and spent money then they could be fined. It really wasn't worth the hassle for me and since I had a lot of guests who would have problems I nixed it as an option.

If your heart is set on it, and your friend's husband is the only affected guest, then I would say just go for it, especially if there is a good chance that they can't go anyway. If you REALLY want her and her husband there though, I would pick another country.

I am seeing a lot of Americans every time I am in Cuba. You have to remember that it's USA who has issues with Cuba. Cuba doesn't have any issues with USA. You will be greated with a smile and respect. Expect a lot of anti-american jokes against your government though. :)

Most travel through Mexico or Toronto as these routes seems to be the cheapest options.

All you have to do is ask the customs agent not to stamp your passport. They actually know this and won't do it,but you should still ask. It's very safe and thousands go through this every year. I've never heard of anyone ever having any problems upon return.

Americans are only allowed to go to Cuba with a special license from the US govt - for educational programs/volunteer/journalism, etc. You have to apply ahead of time and be approved. Even if you are approved, there are restrictions on travel. I have a friend who went to Cuba on a medical volunteer program in medical school - not only was it a lot of work for her, but she didn't know if it would even be approved until the last minute.

So, I think it is fair to assume that an American would not make it there for your wedding... hopefully those restrictions will be lifted soon though..

Exactly...I think the fine is $30K if found out that we (US citizens) visit Cuba illegally.

I have known people that have gone with no problem, but it is a total gamble and considered illegal. Unless you get a visa for education or work.

I am so jealous of Canadians being allowed to go to Cuba, I have always wanted to visit, but will want until we are legally allowed to.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
