sylvia, just checking in to let you know im thinking of you today and hoping that this meeting was not to cut you all loose. if so, that sucks, but remember there is a silver lining to every cloud. (sometimes you just have to look really hard for it.)

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to post. I know you guys have been on pins and needles waiting to find out what happened!

Well, it went as I expected. My job is terminated as of November 2. The company is outsourcing our IT department and they are offering us positions at the new company. I have until Monday at 10:00 am to put in an application with the new company. They will interview us and make a decision on making us an offer by 10/17.

Here is the kicker, if I don't put in an application and go through the interview process, I am not eligible for the transition package which is 21 weeks of pay. If I find another position with my existing company or any other company, I do not receive transition. If the new company makes me an offer up to 10% less than my current salary and I refuse the offer, I don't get transition. If they do make me an offer at 10% less than my current salary I will start working for a company that sucks!

I will not retain any seniority, I will be starting out with no vacation, 1 sick day for every 73 days worked, horrible medical benefits and 6 holidays. I currently have 20 vacations, 5 sick days, 3 personal days and my birthday off. Not to mention 7 paid holidays. The new company is offering a bonus for anyone they hire if they stayed employed there for 1 year. WTF? Is the company that bad that they don't expect us to stay for a year? I think the plan is to put one of their employees in with ours so they can learn everything then they will terminate us after the first year. The transition package will then be based on our 1 year with the new company.

I don't know what to do. I am a senior tech and I know that the new company does not pay their techs very good. I can't imagine that they can even come close to the 10% margin on my salary. So, I think I will be out of a job come 11/2. The whole thing seems kind of shady to me. They were very evasive on some of the questions people had.

I am so upset that companies today treat loyal employees like they are just a number. They have a claim in Columbus to be the "Hometown" bank but they don't treat us like "hometown" people. It's all about numbers. I think this will backfire on them in the long run. What makes it really bad is that I am the one providing health insurance for us. Hubby works 16 hours per week and goes to school fulltime. I never thought it would happen to me.

I sorry you have to go through this~ it is not fair or right... but more and more companies are doing it. Don't get caught up in the bonuses or "transition" pay... money is never free. Do what you've got to do to stay continuously employed, but you have no loyalty to them. I hope that makes sense. Put your app in because you have to, then shop around.

Best wishes to you!

I am so sorry sweetie. I can only imagine what you are going through right now. You are in a tough situation but you have to go with your gut instinct. When one door closes another one opens. Weight out your options and talk with your hubby. You'll get through it, it'll work out for the best.

OMG this is just soo wrong Sylvia!! I have been hoping all day it wasn't going to happen. I can't believe them in the whole if you get your paperwork into the new company you will get some money and if you don't ... well the hell with you wording. I am just floored right now. This is just not the way to treat people!!!

Maybe this is just a turning point for you in life... NOT the best time, but it all works in mysterious ways. Keep your chin up and think on it for a day or 2 if you really want to be going that route with the new company that obviously doesn't care about it's employees. Get that resume out for the whole world to see.. with 21 yrs in your job and even being a high demand techie job.. you will find something!!!

Hey Sylvia I am so sorry that you have to be going through this. It is extremely horrible that many companies are doing this. With the experience that you have I am sure that there is a company out there that will pay you for your knowledge that you hold. I hope the best for you on whatever decision that you and your husband decide to make. Just remember that things happen for a reason. Everything will work out for the better.

Oh Sylvia,

We are all so sorry to hear the news. You sound very disappointed and angry and you have every right to be. It's true what they say, this may be a blessing in disguise. I was laid off 2 mos after I got engaged and thought it was going to be the end of the world....especially since my FI and I were footing the whole wedding bill.

Well, 2 more months passed and I got a new, more fun, and better paying job! It was pretty crappy there for a min. I was getting a little down, but it's the disappointments that make the joyous scenarios so amazing. You and your FI will be closer from these trials and tribulations. Keep your chin up and things will work out.

Good luck!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
