Why is airfare to Cancun so outrageous? Could a TA help?

Recommended Posts

Some of my guests and I were originally looking for cheaper options to fly. We were considering driving to Texas because flights were sig cheaper from the charters...RYAN air was one of them and there is one leaving from Austin I think....VivaAerobus (175.00 per person) Also my TA said that she believes that tickets will be this high for a while and may even go up.sad.gif

Our guests booked ryan air out of houston & aeromexico. It was still around $400. We went through a TA that uses funjet.

Last summer there were $200 flights on suncountry. Sadly, it looks like those days are over sad.gif Since we started watching prices in August, they have only gone up. We booked in september & it hasn't been lower since then.

Ryan air has really strict luggage rules (up to 44 lbs total) so it might not be a good airline for you to fly. It's fine for guests who won't have a lot of luggage, but if you are taking OOT bags or any decorations it would be hard.

I had no idea Ryan Air flew in the States! I've flown them in Ireland, but not here! I'll have to check it out! Thanks!

Airfare is totally ridiculous right now and you ladies are right about the discrepancy with airfare to Cancun vs. Cabo.

FI, my daughter and I are making a "plan the wedding" trip to the Riviera Maya in June and got tix from LAX to Cancun (direct flight) for $414 - which actually isn't too bad compared to what we paid before. But we got really lucky finding that one on hotwire.

And then, we just booked tix for a family vacation in Cabo in July and those tix from LAX to SJD (direct flight) were $458. WTF? A direct flight to Cabo is only 2 hours from L.A. In the past we've paid $300 roundtrip.

The plane fare price hike, is really killing the budget. I hope it gets better or my wedding in 2009 may have a poor turnout. smile27.gif

the increase in price definitly decreased my turnout. But, I wanted less than 30 anyway, so for me it worked out. I was really worried about all the people showing up that planned on it. Most of the guests that are going booked before prices got so high.

yep, the very same Ryan Air. I didn't know they flew here either until we saw the flights on funjet.com. But right before mike's parents booked, there were no more ryan air flights to pick from & they were replaced by aeromexico.

Now with seeing all the airlines canceling flights like frontier & ATA, I think we would have stuck with airlines like continental if possible. I'm just waiting for these 2 months to go by hoping no ones flight gets canceled.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
