Which make-up to buy?

Recommended Posts

I do not wear make up on a day to day basis and probably only put it on 2-3 times a month. I know, sad...lol but I really want to update my look. I really have been wanting to try Bare Minerals but have trouble spending the money on something that I will use so infrequently so I have noticed that several everyday department store brands are coming out with mineral make-ups for around $10-$15. Has anyone tried these and which ones? What worked and what didn't? I am preparded to spend the money on Bare Minerals but if I can find a comparable subsitite that would be great. At this point (1 month 19 days..lol) every cent counts!

I have tried Bare Minerals and it is nice BUT I have also used that mineral makeup at Walmart. It is like a spongy concealer then everything else is powder. I use the one for acne prone skin. It took me a few times of applying before I figured it out but I really like it. I have super sensitive skin and they have the mascara and eyeliner for sensitive eyes. I wear that on a daily basis. I have some slight scarring though so for my wedding day I will probably go with something with super coverage. If you have good skin though I would reccomend that.

I use that mineral makeup from WalMart. I have also used the Bare Mineral makeup. I think the makeup from Walmart works just as good. It may not last as long though. You might have to reapply some powder before the reception. The actual concealer isn't powder though its like a spongy applicator. Then everything else is mineral. I have really sensitive skin and it doesn't break me out at all. I also use the same brand sensitive eye mascara and eyeliner. They aren't water proof so for the wedding I will buy something else. I have some scarring on my face and that makeup hides all of it so it is decent. I usually have to reapply the powder at lunch if I apply inthe morning but I have oily skin. You may not have to.

I would suggest going to a place like Sephora and have them help you out. They can really go in depth with you on what you are looking for and help you pick out brands that work for you. The best part is you can mix and match brands to get the best effects for YOUR skin. I went about a month ago and they were very helpful - I walked out with about $100 of new makeup and brushes but it was sooo worth it.

Also, I use Bare Minerals on a daily basis and really like it for that because it is very lightweight but like Kat I also have some minor pigmentation issues (acne scarring, freckles, etc) so for a big night out I wear Armani (I think that's the one...) foundation + Stila concealer. I'm hesitant to try the other mineral "mimics" out there.

Good idea - I also began with the starter kit. $34 is a steal!

I had a thread on this a while back. But I went to Sephora before the wedding and got bare minerals foundation. I now wear it everyday. I love it b/c I have sensitive skin and its so light I don't feel it. The sephora ladies helped me find everything I needed. It was very helpful. I haven't had to replace any of the makeup I got so far.

You may want to check out Makeup Alley (you can google it for the website link), they've got lots of makeup reviews there from real people.

I bought the Bare Escentials kit for "fair skin" last weekend. I'm more pale than Casper the Ghost and it takes forever for redness to disappear from my skin. I found that this makeup did not cover everything, kinda made my skin look a bit yellow and really emphasizes the lines under my eyes (but only if you look up close, and only my FI gets that close!)

I did try the Physicians Formula mineral powder foundation, but again, it was a colour problem. Too dark and orangy.

Hope that helps, good luck with your search!

I wear make-up probably 3-5 times a year (sad for a woman of my age!) but I don't like it and am not good at it.

Bare Minerals/Bare Escentuals is the only stuff I have used so far that is 1.) idiot proof (which I need) and 2.) effective without looking silly. Keep in mind I know nothing about foundation, only lips & mascara. But I wore this on my wedding day and I still looked like me, only smoother if that makes sense.

Play around with different brands and see what suits you. Good luck!

I was told by a few women at Sephora, that mineral make up is not great for profressional photography since it has SPF in it which reflects the light...I would recommend going into Sephora and having them help you, explain you specifically need it for wedding activities.

I personally used Laura Mercier and I loved it, I still use it now.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
