Any 2011 Brides out there?

Michelle/Nicy/Josietoms/other UK girls - I'm wondering if you all can help me with a little translation? Our crazy English language has so many words with different meanings between us, haha. I emailed the woman (who is Irish) I will be working for this summer in Malawi asking about the dress code. It takes her approximately 2 weeks to respond to all emails and I just got a response today, saying that the dress is "smart casual". She even said that jeans were allowed "as long as they are smart". What does "smart" mean?? I've tried googling but I keep finding many different meanings. I'm hoping one of you can help me. What would you consider a "smart casual" dress code to be? Right now I'm thinking nice jeans and collared shirts. Is that right? And are sneakers acceptable, do you think?

I emailed asking her to clarify, however I don't expect a response for another couple of weeks... and since I leave in a month I'd like to get started on my shopping! :)

Hey mexbride...I'm not from the UK, but I read a lot of British chick-lit so that makes me an expert! Haha....

I think "smart" just means fashionable/presentable/lookin' good. So basically, you can wear jeans, as long as they're not grubby/ripped/nasty looking. Like, I would think darker-wash denim with nice shoes/shirt would be acceptable. Does that sort of make sense?

They're based right in China. There were testimonials from other brides, she sent me pics of work she had done etc and even advised me to go to a pro-seamstress to get my measurements. The dress I'm having her do is the Pronovias Francoli gown from the 2011 Collection. Once i realized that most of the designer gowns are Made in China anyway - I figured why pay thousands of dollars for a designer dress manufactured in China when I can pay a few hundreds for the same dress minus the label ... made in the same place. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Yours was awful huh? Gosh - hopefully I have better luck :-s
Oh I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!!! i hope you have better luck than i did. Don't get me wrong the dress was expertly made, just a little too different from the pics than I had imagined! Luckily the FI has been understanding right from the time I ordered it and said if it turned out not to be "it" than I could just keeping searching here. I'm supposed to be heading to Truro to the bridal shop out there this weekend....fingers crossed this is the last time I have to go out trying on dresses! lol Keep me posted when you get your dress!

smart casual is such as British thing - lol - as we are too scared to come with exactly what we mean!
Basically jeans are acceptable but i would say more darker colours like black and dark demins and more tailored, no stonewash, faded or ripped jeans. Linen trousers would be ok. I wouldnt say trainers (sneakers) are smart casual i would take it to mean a proper shoe; even if it is a casual shoe / sandal.
On the top half say only a white t shirt in t shirt stakes would be classified as 'smart casual' anything else would go ie; loose fitted top with belt, vest top/ cami top with a shirt or cardigan etc - hope this helps.

It just all got on top of me! I feel alot better and am back to the way of thinking i was before. As long as FI and the kiddies are there that is all that truely matters! I know we will have a very special day regardless of who is there or not and i, like you Nicy know i will shed a tear on the day thinking of those that couldn't make it!

It seems we've all had to go through it in some way or another and as horrible as it is it's a comfort to know i'm not the only one!

Onto a good note now! Two of my closest friends have confirmed they are definately coming now and although i was going to wait till we are all booked up i feel i need a boost so i'm going to give them their "will you be my bridesmaid" cards tonight. We're having a girlie dinner so i've bought some bubbly and really looking forward to asking them :o) Fingers x'd they say "yes".. lol. I will let you know what the outcome is tomorrow!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
