I'm American, he's Canadian (living in U.S on work visa)- legal wedding ok in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

My friends are 2 Canadians living in Bermuda. They got married in Mexico and it was legal in Canada. I know that the US recognizes weddings in any country. So, it should not matter what nationality your husband is. Now, he will not automatically have rights to stay in the US. I believe you will have to speak to the Dept of Immigration for that one.

Hola Lisa,

My fiance-now-husband from Canada went to Justice of Peace and got married before heading down to Playa del Carmen for our symbolic wedding.

This saved us trouble/headaches from:

1. Dealing with the INS on his green card application and we didn't experience any delays.

2. Fulfilling the local requirements to get married legally in Mexico.

From what I understand, you still need to go to Justice of Peace to register even after you are legally married in Mexico. Hope this helps.

Shouldn't matter what country either of you are from, you can still get legally married in Mexico, as long as you meet their requirements to be married (translating documents into Spanish, bloodwork, etc.).

A lot of people get legally married in their country of residence first (in the case of you and your fiance, the US) to save the hassle of the paperwork, avoid medical tests, and save money.

My fiance is Canadian and I am American, but we are living in Canada. I am here in a work visa, also. We did our legal paperwork (don't really want to call it a wedding -- that's in Mexico!) here in Canada and once we have our marriage certificate, I'll be sending a copy of it to Citizenship and Immigration Canada to go along with the paperwork I've already sent for my permanent resident status.

If for no other reason than to save yourself a significant amount of money, you may want to consider legally marrying in your state before you jet off to Mexico...

Best of luck, fellow American bride who fell in love with a Canadian!

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
