Calgary Area Officiant... Help?

Recommended Posts

Only slightly off topic.... I have had to cancel my destination wedding and move the wedding back home to Calgary next summer. My fiance and I have booked our ceremony space, reception and our photgrapher already.  However, we need an officiant now, and I'm hoping the girls in this forum maybe have some experience from other weddings they have been to recently that can help!

We met with one officiant who was fine - he knows his stuff, been doing it awhile, extremely professional.  He even has his own sound system (but he charges an extra $150 to use it).  The thing is, I felt like something was missing.  We want someone with a bit more 'oomph' - like a bigger personality.  While adaptable is nice, I don't want a chameleon that feels like he couldn't offer any personal experiences, jokes etc.  Yes, there will be an aspect of seriousness to our wedding, and romance, but we are light hearted and fun and want the same vibe at our wedding.  We can do different readings and have jokes written into the ceremony, but I'd like someone that can, on the fly, add a little humour in his opening spiel, or ad-lib something during the ceremony....

Does any Calgary girls have any suggestions of officiants in the area? I know many are looking to do their civil portion here before travelling so I thought I'd give this site a go (even though I'm not technically a destination bride anymore!)

Nomi Whalen is considered the best IMO and is absolutely amazing.... I have attended over 5 weddings where she officiated and the attention, love and personal connection she shows with each couple she married is unmatched. She is a spitfire but spiritual and warm... I love her!!!! (I would bring her with me to Mexico if I could!)

She is the widow of Ed Whalen, famous Calgarian.

Sorry I can't help. Since our officiant is more to just make it legal I chose the cheapest one, which may be far from the best. There is a website that lists officiants in Calgary (posted in Calgary brides thread) and maybe you could check out their websites to see if they have potential. Good luck :)

Tamara Jones is ours. I got a good feeling from her and even though she is a little bit more expensive, she has been such a sweetheart to deal with. Even though it's just legalities, I still wanted it to be nice.

Just spoke with her to confirm a few things - I think I made a right choice!

Sorry I could have mentioned we are using Lucy Miller. My friend and coworker have both used her. I can only tell you that in her home is $100. Not sure to go to a venue.

I just read your post. I am looking for something cheap and to the point to make our marriage legal. How far ahead did you book Lucy?

Thanks !

I haven't booked her yet. She said December was good for January but I should do it soon so I get the date I want.

    • Hi everyone! I have been doing lots of research on various wedding venues all around Mexico, my fiance wants a destination wedding and I am happy to have a wedding wherever so long as the vibe is right and guests are happy!  I have been seriously looking at Cabo Azul and was trying to find potential costs for them, but only found a page about their wedding costs from 2010. Does anyone have any updated information on costs / reviews they would like to share of this venue? Or advice in general, anything helps. Thanks so much, happy wedding planning to all!
    • Hello everyone, I am dreaming of a wedding in Costa Rica and was wondering if I could get any help with venues and wedding planners. I am thinking Tamarindo because a close friend of mine lives there and I've been in town more than a couple of times, she's being helpful but is at a loss when it comes to this subject really so I was wondering if anyone here had recommendations. I am not closed to other town suggestions either, if I happen to find a good place and staff somewhere else. These are the places I have so far, has anyone had any experience with any of them?  Stay In Tamarindo Luxury Villas in Costa Rica Luxury Villas Pinilla Tropical Homes of Costa Rica The Point Luxury Villa Thank you so much for your help!
